Branded Mugs

Did you know that 80% of people own between 1 and 10 promotional products, or that 55% of the time these products create a more favorable impression of the advertiser? Of course, discovering the value and power of promotional products is only half the battle – now it’s a matter of narrowing down your options.

There are a multitude of promotional products available for marketers to choose from, but they’re not all equal in terms of effectiveness and ROI. Ideally, your branded item should tick all three of these boxes: usefulness, longevity, and effectiveness in terms of impressions and recall.

Research shows that mugs and drinkware are among the top promotional products when it comes to these three categories. Read on to discover why.

Usefulness

Here’s a powerful insight for marketers: 77% of consumers says that usability is the number one reason to keep a promotional item.

A 2010 research study by the Advertising Speciality Institute (ASI) revealed that promotional mugs are in the top 5 of the most frequently used promotional items. As many as 53% of U.S. consumers own branded drinkware, and half of those people use their logo-ed mugs and cups between 2 and 3 times per week.

Much of the success of promotional mugs lies in the fact that they are highly popular across demographics, including across age groups and among all genders. However, mugs are slightly more popular outside of big cities; 56% of suburban residents and 54% of rural residents own promotional drinkware, vs. 43% of urban dwellers.

Regionality also matters; mugs are most commonly owned and used by consumers in Ohio, Michigan, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Longevity

Despite all that heavy usage, survey results show that people keep their promotional kitchenware (including mugs and other drinkware) for roughly 8 months on average – longer than many other categories of promo items. This is important, since the longevity of your branded products determines your number of impressions over time.

New developments in manufacturing technology are ensuring that logo-ed mugs last longer than ever before. Dye sublimation prints allow mugs to stand up against the high temperature steam of modern dishwashers for up to 2,000 washes.

Effectiveness

Of course, the ultimate reason why usability and longevity matter is because they contribute to the effectiveness of your promotional item. Getting your brand in front of people for a long period of time and use maximizes your number of impressions, which strengthens your brand and increases your likelihood of converting new customers.

Given the high usability and longevity of promotional mugs, it should come as no surprise that they generate a very high number of impressions: 198 per month, on average. This puts the overall cost per impression of mugs at just $0.004!

Additionally, mugs are also linked to a very high advertising recall, or the ability of the consumer to remember the name of the brand or company after seeing the product. In one study, 57% of people were able to recall the brand they saw on a mug, vs. just 32% for radio and 28% for TV.

This combination of high recall and high number of impressions is what makes mugs such an incredibly effective promotional product. In fact, 70% of consumers surveyed had done business with an advertiser after receiving a promotional mug. In comparison to other promotional products, this puts mugs second only to recognition awards like trophies.

Considering the powerful potential and high ROI of branded mugs, it’s safe to say that their prevalence as a strategic marketing tool will only continue to grow in the coming years.
